Bratislava, Slovakia

Until January 1993, Slovakia and the Czech Republic/Czechia were the country of Czechoslovakia.  Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia, I spent my time in the old town section.  I had hoped to go to restaurants along the Danube, but there was a lot of flooding and entrances were underwater. Old town was pedestrian only and very walkable.

Blue Church

The Church of St. Elizabeth is also known as Blue Church.  This is because blue is by far the predominant color, both outside and inside. It was built from 1908-1913 in the Hungarian Art Nouveau style. It was originally built for the students of the nearby school.

Work II

This is one of two reliefs on the building across from the Blue Church.  The sculptor was created by Ladislav Majerský in 1936. The building houses the District Social Insurance Company and Workers Insurance Company.

Hviezdoslav Square

Hviezdoslav Square is named after the Slovak poet Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav. This fountain is backed by a statue of the poet. The sculpture faces the National Theatre, and the square is ringed by restaurants and benches.

Slovak National Theater

This is the oldest professional theater in Slovakia. It shows opera, ballet, and drama. The theater is based here and in a new building opened in 2007. This building was built in 1885-1886.  The fountain in front is Ganymede, sculpted by Austrian sculptor Viktor Oskar Tilgner in 1888.

Victims of their own aggression 

I was sitting on a bench in old town and noticed this flat artwork at my feet. It is iron and created in 2002. The artist is Andrej Csillag.
